This sculpture is located on the seafront, directly in front of Brighton Fishing Museum. There are two ramps coming off Kings Road that provide step free access to the seafront. These can be found opposite The Old Ship Hotel. Please note that these have a smooth surface but are relatively steep.

By Bus – The nearest route that stops at this sculpture will be the 77 at the ‘Ship Street’ stop. Alternatively, you can get the 1, 1X, 2, 5, 5A, 5B, 6, 7, 12, 12X, 13X, 14, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 27C, 37, 37B, 46, 47, 48, 49, 52, 60 and 77 from ‘North Street’ which will be a short distance from the sculpture.

By Train – If you’re arriving via train, the nearest station will be Brighton. There is a step-free, accessible route via Queens Road, around a 15-minute journey across a 1.2km distance:

• Follow Queens Road until you reach the seafront. Please note that Queens Road is on a downward sloping hill and may be busy.
• Use the accessible crossings on Kings Road.
• From here you can turn left and use the ramps to get to the lower promenade, where the sculpture is located.

Trains: Local and national trains are available from Brighton station. All platforms and trains are accessible with ramps and extra support available at request. There are also accessible ticket barriers.

Bikes: The nearest Beryl Bays will be at Brighton Town Hall, and outside the Odeon on Kings Road.

There are several places to lock up your own bike scattered along the seafront, near the zipwire and near both piers.

Noise Levels – 5/10, with highs of 8-9/10 at peak times.

Brighton seafront can get quite busy, especially on weekends and bank holidays/when the weather is warm. At these times, expect a crowded space around the sculpture, with crowds of people, music from nearby bars, and traffic noise, particularly sirens and horns from the traffic along King’s Road.

Please also note that the small stalls and shops along the seafront under the arches may be open with stock outside. This will also draw crowds in.

There is a drainage/small ditch in front of the sculpture that may be difficult for wheelchair users to manoeuvrer over. Please be aware of this. There is room around the sculpture for you to move around without going over this.

The Lanes Car Park. Around 400 feet away, around a 2-minute journey.

Brighton Centre Russell Road Car Park. 550-metre distance away, around an 8-minute journey.

Churchill Square Red Car Park. 500-metre distance away, around a 7-minute journey.

• • There is a step-free, accessible route via Regency Street.Make a right onto West Street, and use the accessible crossing on Kings Road to access the ramps.

The nearest on-street, Blue Badge parking will be on Ship Street. Alternatively, you can use a Blue Badge on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours as long as no loading restrictions are in force. You can also pay for free and for an unlimited time in Pay and Display bays.

General toilets can be found by the zip wire, by the East of the pier. The men’s toilets are located under the slope, while the women’s toilets are located under the steps. These are also open 9am until 6pm. Brighton Pier also offers on site accessible and general toilet facilities.

One of the nearest accessible changing place toilets will be in the Shelter Hall. It is 240 metres away and around a 3-minute journey East of the sculpture along the lower promenade.

This is open from 9am until 6pm and includes a height adjustable wall mounted bench with an alarm, privacy screen, shower, colostomy shelf, ceiling hoist and loop hoist, and a height adjustable wash basin. There is a second changing place along Madeira Drive: Lower Prom, East of Brighton Pier, Madeira Drive, Brighton, BN2 1TW. This changing place offers the same facilities as the Shelter Hall, with the same opening times.

This BookBench has a bright pink background around the entire sculpture. On the front of the bench can be seen five sardines, drawn in a relatively flat graphic style in blue and white. They are swimming from right to left and only take up the right side of the bench, leaving the left fully pink. On the back of the bench, in the same style, there is a tin partly opened to reveal three fish. On the tin, Sardines is written in a bold dark blue. The pull-tab on the tin is painted gold, as are the pages of the book.
