Westdene's Learning Journey

Location: Withdean Sports Complex
Our Arts Ambassadors at Westdene Primary School and Preschool took inspiration from the beautiful Westdene landscape when designing our sculpture. They chose the iconic Westdene windmill and a picturesque scene from Green Ridge, celebrating the local environment that surrounds our school and plays such an important role in our community identity. The children were keen for the sculpture to reflect our school learning values and the growth mindset that underpins everything we do at Westdene.
Helping children understand how they learn is just as important as what they learn. Our family of learning animals makes this visible. Each animal represents a powerful learning behaviour—resilience, curiosity, independence, pride and collaboration—and supports children in becoming confident, reflective learners. Each creature captures a key aspect of growth mindset and helps us nurture a culture of lifelong learning across the school.
Our sculpture brings all of this together—a celebration of our local environment, our learning values and the creativity of our pupils.

Accessibility
Accessing the sculpture
The sculpture will be situated in Withdean Sports Complex. The entrance is from a road which leads off Withdean Road
The paving by the entrance is flat and in good condition.
Public transport
By Bus – The nearest bus stop is Withdean Sports Complex. More frequent bus routes serve Tongdean Lane East (5, 5A, 17, 270) and Tongdean Lane West (27, 77).
Local and national trains are available from Preston Park station. This is a 1.4km walk along a busy road (London Road).All platforms and trains are accessible with ramps and extra support available at request. There are also accessible ticket barriers.
The nearest Beryl Bay to the sculpture is Withdean Sports Complez.
There are cycle racks outside the centre.
What to expect from the location
Noise Levels – 4/10.
Withdean Sports Complex is a leisure centre, so expect that it may be busy and noisy, particularly when there are classes and activity. Later in the evenings it may be quieter.
Parking
Directly outside Withdean Sports Complex
The nearest Blue Badge parking bay is outside the entrance. Alternatively, you can use a Blue Badge on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours as long as no loading restrictions are in force.
Facilities
The nearest public toilets will be within the Sports Complex
The nearest changing place will be at Preston Park. This is a 2km distance and a long journey. We recommend using local bus services to access this Changing place toilet.
