We are the Bright Horizons Wish Park Beach Scavengers. After finding a ray during one of our Beach School adventures, the children’s imaginations ran wild. They were full of curiosity as we wondered together how it came to be on the beach, who its friends might be, and what other creatures live beneath the waves and along the shore. Inspired by their conversations, we created our magical storytelling bench—a special space where children can explore books, share ideas, and let their imaginations flourish through stories inspired by the wonders of the beach. As the sun sets, the bench comes to life, glowing like a little piece of seaside magic to keep the stories shining.

Accessibility

Accessing the sculpture

The sculpture will be situated inside King Alfred Leisure Centre in the upper pool area to the right of reception. The entrance to the leisure centre is from a road which leads off Kingsway.

The paving by the entrance is flat and in good condition.

Public transport

Buses: The nearest bus stop is King Alfred Leisure Centre. The only direct bus is the 700, but you can also get the 1/1X/6/49 to nearby Church Road and walk a short distance to the leisure centre.

 

Trains: Local and national trains are available from Hove station. This is a 1.3km journey. There is partial step free access to this station.

 

Bikes: The nearest Beryl Bay to the sculpture is King Alfred.

There are cycle racks outside the centre.

What to expect from the location

Noise Levels – 4/10.

King Alfred is a leisure centre, so expect that it may be busy and noisy, particularly when there are classes and activity. Later in the evenings it may be quieter. The pool area can also quite warm and humid, with sounds being quite echoey.

Parking

King Alfred. Directly adjacent

    • There is a step-free, accessible route via Kingsway
      • Exit the car park onto the seafront and turn right
      • Go up Hove Street and turn right at the end onto Kingsway
    • Disabled bays available and free parking with a blue badge
    • From £2.90 for 1 hours up to £18 for 12 hours.

The nearest Blue Badge parking bay is in the car park. Alternatively, you can use a Blue Badge on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours as long as no loading restrictions are in force.

Facilities

The nearest public toilets will be within the Leisure Centre.

The nearest changing place will be at Rockwater. This is arounda 650-metre distance and around a 9-minute journey. This is a fully equipped changing place.
