Sir David Attenborough sculpture unveiled for The Story Trail
The sculpture, to celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, will be displayed in Brighton & Hove this autumn as part of Amaze’s Story Trail
Amaze, a local charity supporting families with disabled children, have today unveiled the latest sculpture for their Brighton & Hove sculpture trail.
The sculpture, created by Brighton-based artist duo The Postman, features an image of Sir David Attenborough and has been revealed ahead of his 100th birthday (8th May 2026).
The Postman are known for their large-scale public art, rooted in urban culture and designed for real spaces. Their art often includes public figures and musicians and can be found across Brighton & Hove.
The Story Trail is a free fun family event which takes place between September – November 2026. 30 large BookBench sculptures will be displayed in the city’s streets and public spaces, alongside 40 smaller sculptures produced by children and young people in nurseries, schools and youth groups. Each large sculpture is sponsored by a business, and there are opportunities remaining for businesses to sign up.
Amaze say The Story Trail aims to bring the community together while highlighting the daily reality for local families with disabled children. In Brighton & Hove and East Sussex, 1 in 6 families support a child with a disability or special educational needs (SEND).
This is the second sculpture to be unveiled, following the unveiling of Sweet Memory by Ilona Drew in October. All the remaining sculptures will be revealed in September, with artworks from Sarah Arnett, Faye Bridgwater and more.
Hannah Allbrooke, Head of Fundraising at Amaze, said:
“We are thrilled to celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with this incredible piece by The Postman. Sir David is a symbol of wonder and resilience; qualities we see every day in the disabled children and young people we support.
“This trail is about more than just art. It is about connection and belonging. Families with disabled children often face significant barriers. Every pound raised through The Story Trail and auction helps these families ensures they are not facing these challenges alone.”
The Postman, who created the artwork said:
“Sir David Attenborough has always been one of our absolute icons — in fact, he featured in one of our earliest artworks back in 2019. To celebrate his 100th birthday with this sculpture feels incredibly special for us, honouring someone who has inspired generations and remains a true national treasure.”
Charlie Langhorne, Managing Director and Co-founder, Wild in Art added:
“We are delighted that Sir David Attenborough, who has spent a lifetime telling the story of our natural world, is being celebrated through the art of storytelling in a different form. The Postman have created something truly special here and their ability to capture the spirit of a public figure is remarkable. This piece feels like a fitting tribute to a man whose voice has brought the wonders of nature to life for so many. We hope visitors to Brighton and Hove this autumn will be inspired by this incredible artwork.”
Amaze provides specialist information and practical advice to over 7,000 families each year. With the demand for SEND services rising and funding under pressure, the support of the local community is more important than ever.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the sculpture this autumn. Details on how to donate to the Story Trail and support local families with disabled children can be found on the Amaze website https://amazesussex.org.uk/thestorytrail .
