I walked on fire for Amaze – here’s why you should too

Thinking of fundraising for Amaze? Read on to find out more about our 2025 Firewalk and why walking on hot coals is an impressive but totally achievable challenge…

Marie is our Parent Groups & Befriending Manager, but she’s also a firewalker! Last year, along with lots of members of our befriending team, staff and many others, Marie walked on hot coals to raise money for Amaze. Here, she tells us what it was like in a bid to inspire others to take on the challenge for us next month.

What inspired you to take part in Amaze’s Firewalk in 2025?

“One of our volunteer befrienders mentioned that they had booked a place and it sounded like a really fun thing to do as a team. As well as working for Amaze, I had recently had support around my daughter transitioning into adult services, so it felt nice to give something back. It also didn’t feel like there was a massive fundraising target, so it felt achievable too.”

Can you describe what was going through your mind as you stepped onto the hot coals?

“I may have said a couple of swear words as I first stepped onto the coals, but as we were doing it as a team there was so much encouragement from everyone that it put everything else out of my mind. Definitely a case of mind over matter.”

Was the Firewalk what you expected, and how did you feel afterward?

“It was really invigorating, and I was proud that I had done it, although it was over a lot faster than I had initially expected. There was a real buzz and some of the team went on to do it twice. I was proud of myself, and the team, for achieving something I had never actually thought about doing before.”

What would you say to someone who’s curious about the Firewalk but feels nervous about doing it?

“There really is nothing to be nervous about. Before the walk you spend some time as a group learning how to successfully walk across the coals without burning yourself. And when it comes to your turn, you are excited and keen to complete the walk. I can guarantee you will have a fun evening and feel really proud of yourself afterwards. It’s a great way to raise money and achieve something you can tick off that bucket list.”
