What?

Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean Gardens is said to be one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of historic features on a gentle walk around the grounds. An impressive collection of 13 working Victorian glasshouses, a walled kitchen garden, a 300 foot Edwardian pergola, a spring garden with flint bridges and the occasional surreal fibreglass tree, offer year round interest to garden visitors. The Visit England-endorsed restaurant serves freshly made lunches and afternoon teas, plus breakfasts at weekends and Bank Holidays. The onsite gift shop sells an imaginative range of gifts and seasonal plants, so it’s well worth a regular visit.
General provision: One carer is admitted free of charge and there’s no charge for under 16s.
Compass Card offer: 50% discount on ‘standard’ entry for over 16s.  Please note the Compass Card offer does not apply on ‘special event’ days.
Accessibility: The Visitor Centre is all on one level, with access to the shop, restaurant and accessible toilet. The garden paths are mainly hard-standing, with some having a thin layer of gravel. There is restricted access to the glasshouses, which are not wheelchair accessible. Throughout the gardens there are some slopes, steps, gravel paths and some tarmac paths. The Pergola has steps up onto it, but is accessible  alongside. There are six accessible parking spaces directly outside the visitors centre.
