What?

The only one of its kind open to the public, this 15th century Wealden hall house stands in a traditional cottage garden on the edge of Ashdown Forest.  The house was owned in turn by Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, Anne of Cleves, Mary I and Elizabeth I. It is now furnished with 17th and 18th century country furniture and domestic objects, while the garden is planted with over 170 culinary, medicinal and household herbs. The resident curator gives fascinating tours of the house and garden if requested and you’re welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the cottage garden. Unless agreed in advance, under 16s need to be accompanied by an adult.
Compass Card offer: One carer is admitted free of charge when accompanying a Compass Card holder.
Accessibility: Free on street parking and car park within 200 yards of the house. Public toilets near by (NB. these are not accessible). Due to the historic nature of the building, there are changes of level and wheelchair access to the house is limited. The majority of the garden is accessible. Much of the collection is open to tactile handling.
