Signing up for Yr Wyddfa Trek

Denise had been a long time supporter and volunteer of Amaze, so when she spotted the Yr Wyddfa trek last year, she knew she had to sign up.

“I wanted to support Amaze as a charity firstly as I think it is a great charity for families in need.” Denise says.

But the challenge was about more than this for Denise. “I wanted to come on this challenge to push myself, to tap into my personal power. To feel, to appreciate, overcome and to have the opportunity to meet new people.”

This was Denises first full experience of a mountain climb but she didn’t let that slow her down! “I absolutely loved it, perhaps I will go bigger.”

How was the trail for you?

Walking alongside 5 other Amaze fundraisers, as well as others raising money for other charities, their ascent started in the early hours of the morning.

“I really really cherished my journey to the top of the mountain. I took it slow and steady. There are a few slippery parts, so I just took it step by step. You must make sure you have decent equipment – good walking boots. I felt like I was wearing all the right things so mostly it felt like an easy, comfortable hike.”

The team reached the top in time to see the sunrise from the peak. “The views were outstanding even with some cloud.”

What kept you motivated?

“Knowing that you’re helping out others in need. Raising money for Amaze. Knowing that there are others climbing the mountain for the first time with you and their energy and encouragement will keep you going.”

Denise then spoke about how the challenge continued to motivate her “As the mountain hike became steeper, I found an unexpected surge of energy as it went up and I felt more alive than ever as we got towards the peak. I saw the point I needed to get to, and I just worked really hard at it. I didn’t stop until I made it happen.”

The top of the mountain

“I was just smiling like The Cheshire Cat who got the cream” Denise says.

“In that first 60 seconds I was there, at the top of the world, I was totally breathless. Such a beautiful moment that I will never forget. I felt totally energized and at one with the universe.”

Climbing Yr Wyddfa also gives the opportunity to connect with its rich history. Denise said, “not only did I feel visually connected to the nature and beauty, but I also felt connected via the backstory about the history of Snowdon.”

What would you say to anyone considering doing the trail?

“Do it, it’s so worth it. Expand your horizons, share an incredible experience with people you’ve never met before. It’s so rewarding at the end to know you got there. You made it.”

Denise then expressed the joy of connecting with new people from the hike saying “To receive your medal and look back at your photos to see what you did with your new friends. To celebrate and remember I did that – I climbed a mountain.”

Finally, we asked if Denise had any plans in the future to take on any more iconic mountains? Her response “I would love to get up Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK) that’s my next goal. I hope to do it this year.”
