Your Choice, Your Voice: our new group for sharing views and shaping Amaze services for young people

Your Choice, Your Voice is a new group that has been set up by some of the young people from our Amazing Futures peer support project.  The group aims to give young people more responsibility and a voice within Amaze to shape the offers and opportunities we provide.  Through participating in the group, young people are building their confidence to speak up and work together as a team, and Amaze is capturing the ideas and feedback on how to develop our services and support. Jade, our former Amazing Futures Intern, has switched to a new role dedicated to supporting the voice group, which brings together young people from both the Brighton & Hove and Eastbourne branches of Amazing Futures.

page from presentation about young people's prioritiesYoung people in the voice group have already told us what matters to them right now, and the difference that Amazing Futures peer support is having on their lives.  They told us they value connecting with other people like them in a welcoming and supportive environment, the diverse activities on offer, and opportunities to develop skills and confidence.  Young people said they want Amazing Futures to run more sessions where they can be physically active together and workshops on money/budgeting, time management and studying/revision skills.

But this is just the beginning!  The group is exploring ideas for promoting Amazing Futures so more young people are aware of it and get involved, such as a closed Facebook group, and wants to develop ways they can be more involved in the running of Amaze.  Jade did a presentation for Amaze trustees at the last management committee meeting to initiate this.  How Amaze communicates with young people and the language we use to describe ‘additional needs’, plus providing an accessible and young people-friendly version of Amaze’s new Strategic Plan, are all issues up for further discussion.  The group is also responding to requests Amaze receives from other services who are looking to hear from SEND young people about their experiences and needs.

As Nelson Mandela said, “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow”. Through Your Choice, Your Voice, young people in Amazing Futures are paving the way for them and their peers.
