Return to school letter from Vicky Ford MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families
Vicky Ford, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families, has written a letter about returning to school for children and young people with SEND, their families and carers, and those who work to support them:
In the letter, Minister Ford acknowledges some of the additional challenges that children and young people with SEND are likely to face returning to school after a prolonged absence. She also outlines resources the government has created to assist school staff and families with managing the return. For example, The Whole School SEND (WSS) Consortium have produced a handbook to support educational professionals to successfully re-engage children and young people with SEND with learning after a period of disruption, as well as a COVID-19 SEND Review Guide to help schools reflect on their provision before September. There is also a leaflet to help families and carers ask questions to schools to support successful returns. You can access all these resources via SEND gateway.
Minister Ford’s letter also includes information on behaviour policies, risk assessments, face coverings, specialist and visiting practitioners, mental health and wellbeing, aerosol generating procedures and hospital schools.
