Home to school transport issues in Brighton & Hove – update

[Scroll down for update from Brighton & Hove City Council.]

We know that there have been some delays confirming home to school transport (HTST) arrangements, and mistakes made, for some families in Brighton and Hove in receipt of HTST for their child. We know how essential it is for both the child or young person, and their parent carer, that these journeys to school run smoothly and how incredibly stressful, upsetting and sometimes dangerous, it can be when these go wrong.

Amaze has been supporting the hard work which the Parent and Carers Council (PaCC) has been doing to try to influence the council’s processes and communications around HTST, so we are really concerned to hear about the number of families experiencing high levels of anxiety in their child(ren) or for themselves as their arrangements have not been finalised or are not appropriate. See the PaCC emergency position statement to find out more.

We encourage you to call the HTST team direct, on 01273 293501, if you have an outstanding query or complaint about your child’s transport arrangements. If you want advice about appealing a decision on where your child gets HTST you can contact the Amaze SENDIASS helpline.

Amaze’s CEO, Rachel Travers, has written to Brighton & Hove City Council’s Director of Children Services and his team to ask for a formal response on how things have been managed this year and how they can ensure this doesn’t happen again. We’ve also asked that they work more in co-production with parent carers to implement improvements in the future. We will update you in due course when we receive a response.

Richard Barker, Head of School Organisation has issued a response to PaCC’s position statement on behalf of Brighton & Hove City Council.

Richard will be available to talk to parent carers who have not heard about their child or young person’s home to school transport arrangements on Friday 6 September 12-4pm and Monday 9 September 2-5pm. Please call 01273 290732. He apologises for being unavailable this afternoon for unplanned reasons.
