Foundations for our Future – improving mental health and wellbeing services across Sussex

The number of children and young people needing help and support for their emotional health and wellbeing across Sussex is growing every year. And it isn’t surprising that this has increased further, and at a faster rate, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The majority of families contacting our SENDIASS advice line are facing mental health challenges on top of other issues they might be needing support with. For young people accessing our Amazing Futures services, their mental health is the priority focus in our group and one-to-one sessions. Mental health services across Sussex are under huge pressure to respond.

As it’s Children’s Mental Health Week, it seems timely to update you on the work of Foundations for our Future (FFoF). This is the name of the Sussex-wide programme seeking to drive improvement in children and young people’s mental health services. The FFoF review highlighted the current system is not working as it should, and identified 20 recommendations intended to drive forward much-needed change. Amaze and the three parent carer forums in Sussex – PaCC, ESPCF and WSPCF – attend partnership meetings, where we discuss implementation of the FFoF recommendations and plan strategic developments. Young people in Amazing Futures have also met with the FFoF Young People Participation Lead to provide their input.

We’ll keep you updated as the FFoF strategy moves forward and we hopefully start to see change on the ground in terms of support for children and young people’s mental health needs.
