Amaze seeks SENDIASS volunteers

Interested in supporting other families with children with SEN and disabilities? Consider becoming a SENDIASS volunteer.

Volunteers are really important to the work that our Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) does across Brighton & Hove and East Sussex. Our SENDIASS advice line volunteers help pick up the messages from parent carers and young people which gives our advisers more time to focus on call backs. Our SENDIASS volunteers also work directly with families by helping them prepare for meetings, attending meetings with them to give emotional support and clarify issues, and helping them with paperwork. This can be a huge help to families who need support to implement the guidance that we give them.

We are currently recruiting more SENDIASS volunteers. We offer training and supervision with an expectation that you will be able to give a few (daytime) hours each month to supporting families. Many of our volunteers are parent carers themselves, others have working experience of SEND, and some have both!

Charlotte, one of our existing volunteers, says: “Being a SENDIASS volunteer is very rewarding – I find I can use my existing skills and learn new ones, so it is stimulating and interesting. But the best part is knowing I have offered a small amount of help that has a big impact for the parents and for which they are very appreciative, so I feel I am making a difference. The role is quite flexible so it works well if you are unable to make a regular commitment and we are very well supported by Amaze staff.”

If you are interested in becoming a SENDIASS volunteer, then please contact Liam Ryan, SENDIASS Manager, to discuss the volunteer role and the training that we offer. Email or call 07483 111659.
